Langtang is a narrow valley that lies just south of the Tibetan
border, and is just north of the Kathmandu valley. It is sandwiched
between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly
lower range of snowy peaks to the south. The area was designated
as Nepal's first Himalayan national park in 1971.
This high and isolated region is inhabited by Tamangs whose
religious practices, language and dress are much more similar
to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their cousins
in the Middle Hills. A visit to the Langtang valley offers
an opportunity to explore villages, climb small peaks and
visit glaciers at a comfortably low elevation.
Though it's close to Kathmandu, the region sees far fewer
trekkers than Everest and Annapurna. The trails are challenging
with long climbs and descents, often through deep virgin forests
or across glacial moraines. Langtang treks offer an experience
not found elsewhere.
