Karma Sherpa is from Trakshindu in the SoluKhumbu district of Eastern Nepal.
The story of the path that led him to a career in mountain guiding is interesting...
As a young man, Karma attended public school for six years before joining
the Trakshindu Monastery to pursue life as a Buddhist Monk. He was a member
of the order for three years and went on to continue his studies of Buddhism
at a foreign-funded college for monks in Kathmandu. Three years later, the
college was moved from Kathmandu to the Kingdom of Sikkim in India. Karma
elected to stay in Nepal and began to work with one of his roommates as an
assistant-cook on expeditions. He spent 3-4 years as a kitchen-boy and learned
to speak English while working as an assistant-guide for five years. Karma
earned his Trekking Guides' license in 1995 and began working with Gelu Sherpa.
His life experience lends greatly to trekking expeditions.
Karma's favorite trekking is in the Everest region because "the clients
like it so much. Annapurna Round is excellent as well."
