Kaji Sherpa is from near Salleri in the SoluKhumbu district of eastern Nepal. His story on how he came to be in the trekking business is amusing...
Like many young Sherpa boys who grow tired of farm-life and hear about good trekking jobs, Kaji ran away from home when he was 15. His parents did not know where he had gone for quite some time until he sent them a letter telling them he was alive and doing well in Lukla. He found a job collecting firewood for one of the many lodges there. He did this for three years until a friend, who was a kitchen-boy on treks, helped him get a job. This was in 1993. He worked as kitchen-boy and assistant-guide for three years and then started cooking on trekking expeditions which he has been doing every year since.
Kaji's favorite trek is the 'Ghorepani Loop' because "there are nice views from Poon Hill of Annapurna and Dhauligiri, the local people are really nice and it's an easy trek."
